Guilty Pleas Entered Ahead of Trial
At a pre-trial review in Cambridge Crown Court, 33-year-old Anthony Williams entered guilty pleas to 12 counts of wounding with intent and two counts of attempting to wound with intent. He also pleaded guilty to several ancillary offences, including affray, knife theft and possession of a bladed article. The pleas were entered via video link from Rampton Hospital in Nottinghamshire. According to the Independent, Williams continues to deny 14 counts of attempted murder linked to the same series of incidents.
Series of Stabbing-Related Offences
The offences for which Williams pleaded guilty are scheduled to be recorded for three separate dates:
- October 31 – guilty pleas to affray at a Peterborough barber shop and to theft of knives from an Asda store in Stevenage.
- November 1 – scheduled admission of possession of a bladed article at Pontoon Dock DLR station in London, as well as possession of a knife on a train traveling between Peterborough and Huntingdon and a common assault on a Govia Thames Link service.
- November 2 – scheduled guilty plea for assault occasioning actual bodily harm of a male police officer while in custody.
These incidents culminated in a mass-stabbing on the 18:25 Doncaster-London service on 1 November, where passengers and staff were injured after the train left Peterborough and was forced to stop at Huntingdon railway station. The BBC notes that the train attack prompted the current legal proceedings.
Legal Implications and Prosecutor’s View
Prosecutor Christopher Paxton KC indicated that the guilty pleas do not resolve the indictment and that a full trial will still be required to address the remaining attempted-murder charges. This underscores the seriousness of the pending case, as the court must still determine liability for the alleged murders of ten individuals named in earlier proceedings.
Next Steps in the Judicial Process
Williams is scheduled to stand trial the week following the pre-trial review. The trial will address the 14 counts of attempted murder that remain contested, alongside the already-admitted wounding offences. The outcome will determine any further custodial sentences beyond those already imposed for the pleaded-guilty charges.
