History

Historical Context

The October 18 2026 drone strike on Sberbank’s Balakovo data centre echoed the 27 June 2017 NotPetya attack that originated in Ukraine and caused over $10 billion in global losses. Both incidents targeted critical financial and AI services, and security agencies have linked NotPetya to the Russian GRU’s Sandworm group amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine hybrid war that began with the 2014 Crimea annexation.
