History

Historical Context

In 1995, the murder of 19-year-old teenager Leah Jones in Manchester sparked a citywide CCTV expansion, installing 1,200 cameras by 1997. Greater Manchester Police allocated £2.5 million from the Home Office to fund the network, improving evidence collection and suspect identification across the metropolitan area. The 2026 stabbing of Alisha Samuels on Dorking Avenue mirrors that earlier case, prompting GMP detectives Justin Bryant to request CCTV footage for arrests. This continuity underscores how early surveillance investments shape modern policing, suggesting further camera deployments could deter future violent crimes across Manchester and Liverpool.
