History

Historical Context

The Babri Masjid, a 16th-century mosque in Ayodhya, became the flashpoint of Hindu nationalist mobilization that began with VHP campaigns in the 1980s and Advani’s 1990 Rath Yatra. On 6 December 1992, a rally of about 150,000 VHP, BJP and RSS supporters stormed the site, prompting Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao to deploy security forces and triggering riots that killed roughly 2,000 people.
