History

Historical Context

The 1992 Bombay communal riots, sparked after the Babri Masjid demolition, erupted into widespread stone-throwing assaults on public transport, killing dozens. Maharashtra police logged over 1,200 stone-related complaints, documenting 3,500 injuries, while Shiv Shakti Mitra reported 45 buses vandalized in the city. Today's stone attack on a Khanna bus, condemned by Jammu-Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and PDP leader Waheed Para, mirrors those communal targeting patterns. The 1992 precedent shows that unchecked sectarian violence can trigger inter-state police cooperation and spur demands for stricter hate-crime statutes.
