History

Historical Context

In June 1975, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a national Emergency, suspending civil liberties and arresting opposition leaders. The government detained roughly 2.5 million citizens, including Congress stalwart Sanjay Gandhi’s rival, while the press faced a 19-month blackout. Today, Rahul Gandhi’s October 18, 2026 Hanoi trip sparks BJP’s Pradeep Bhandari to label it a holiday, echoing past accusations of opposition subversion. The recurrence suggests India’s electoral disputes may again test democratic resilience, prompting scrutiny of leaders Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
