Postponement of the Future Investment Initiative
The Future Investment Initiative (FII) 10, titled “The Power of Legacy,” was slated for October 26-29 2026 in Riyadh. Organisers announced on Monday that the conference will be moved to 2027, with new dates to be set “very soon.” The decision was framed as necessary to preserve the event’s scale, quality, and impact for partners, members, speakers, and delegates.
Security Context and Recent Escalation
The postponement follows a surge in missile and drone strikes by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group. Recent attacks hit Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport, killed more than a dozen people, and downed a reconnaissance helicopter near the Yemen border, killing two Saudi National Guard members. Additional missiles were intercepted elsewhere in the kingdom. These incidents have disrupted air travel, extended remote learning for schools, and raised doubts about Riyadh’s safety for commuting executives.
Official Statements & Responses
- The FII Institute issued an advisory stating the event will now take place in 2027, emphasizing the need to ensure the “full scale, quality, and impact” expected by participants.
- Messe Frankfurt Saudi Arabia, organizer of the Intersec Saudi Arabia exhibition, said, ““The decision follows close monitoring of recent developments in Saudi Arabia and was taken in co-ordination with the venue, the local government partners, and the event’s local and international stakeholders,” — Messe Frankfurt Saudi Arabia” and noted that the exhibition, originally set for November 16-18 2026, will be held in October 2027.
- Messe Frankfurt also confirmed the Saudi Retail Forum, scheduled for November 19 2026, is postponed to March 2027.
Impact and Outlook
FII has become a cornerstone of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030 diversification drive. In 2025, the summit generated agreements valued at more than $50 billion, and Public Investment Fund Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan has cited cumulative deals exceeding $250 billion since the event’s inception. The postponement adds to a broader pattern of regional disruptions: the European Union-Gulf Cooperation Council summit in Riyadh, the MIPIM Middle East real-estate event, and the “Six Kings Slam” tennis tournament have all been delayed or cancelled.
What’s Next
The FII organizers plan to announce the 2027 schedule later this year. In the meantime, other high-profile regional gatherings—such as Dubai Future Finance Week and Qatar’s Economic Forum—have been rescheduled, reflecting ongoing security concerns across the Gulf.
