History

Historical Context

The 1973 OPEC oil embargo, declared in October 1973, triggered a nationwide fuel crisis that doubled diesel prices within months. President Richard Nixon’s administration responded by creating the Emergency Petroleum Allocation Act, which limited gasoline use and allocated $2 billion to stabilize markets. Today's rally at Park City’s Heartland Credit Union Arena, featuring former President Donald Trump and Kansas Farm Bureau leader Glenn Brunkow, echoes those 1970s farmer-fuel protests demanding tax relief on diesel. The precedent shows that federal tax adjustments, like Trump’s recent executive order, can quickly lower diesel costs, potentially saving farmers millions and reshaping rural political alliances.
