Fatal Four-Vehicle Collision Near Newry
On Monday 19 October, a collision involving a white Scania lorry, a white van, a blue BMW and a white Toyota Auris occurred at the junction of Armagh Road and Church Road in Newry. The Police Service of Northern Ireland’s (PSNI) Collision Investigation Unit received the report at approximately 6:30 a.m. BST. Detective Inspector Stewart of the unit confirmed that the driver of the BMW, a man in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Vehicles and Casualties
The crash involved four distinct vehicles: the Scania lorry, the van, the BMW and the Toyota Auris. Two occupants of the van—the driver and a passenger—sustained serious injuries and were transported to hospital for treatment. The drivers of both the Toyota Auris and the Scania lorry escaped injury. In total, one fatality and two serious injuries were recorded.
Emergency Services Response
Police officers, together with personnel from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, attended the scene shortly after the report was received. Medical treatment was provided on-site before the injured were taken to hospital. The coordinated response was described by a PSNI spokesperson as following standard protocols for multi-vehicle collisions.
Investigation and Road Closure
Following the incident, Armagh Road remained closed into the evening of 19 October while investigators examined the circumstances of the crash. Diversions were put in place to manage traffic flow. The PSNI’s Collision Investigation Unit continues to gather evidence, and the road closure is expected to remain until the investigation is complete and safety can be assured.
