History

Historical Context

John Paul II’s 1992 Sarajevo appeal built on a decade of papal diplomacy, from his 1979 Poland visit that bolstered Solidarity to his 1990-92 trips across war-torn regions. By then he had already traveled to 129 countries, using Vatican influence to urge UN-brokered cease-fires, a pattern echoed in later conflicts and humanitarian initiatives.
