Summary

Russia Satellite Near ICEYE

Russia's military satellite Cosmos 2612 came within 26 metres of the U.S.-registered ICEYE-X36 satellite.
The closest pass occurred at 03:41 Polish time on 18 October 2026, per CelesTrak data.
Cosmos 2612 matched ICEYE-X36’s orbital plane and altitude.
No public evidence shows Russia attacked ICEYE-X36.
Western officials have not issued a public warning about the approach.

Summary

US Space Force Deploys

U.S. Space Force announced deployment of on-orbit space-control weapons to protect critical satellites.
Russia’s Kosmos 2612 performed multiple propulsion burns beginning late September 2026.
Telemetry shows Kosmos 2612 altered velocity by roughly 27.9 m/s to match ICEYE-X36’s orbital plane.
ICEYE’s radar constellation provides all-weather imagery to Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence under a bilateral intelligence agreement.
Western defense commands are accelerating development of dynamic maneuvering tactics, defensive laser shielding and responsive space surveillance.

German Space Chief Warns

Russian officials warned that commercial satellites aiding Ukraine may be treated as legitimate targets.
Customary practice keeps satellites at least six miles apart because no treaty sets a minimum separation.
German Space Command chief Maj. Gen. Michael Traut said the tactic could endanger large constellations such as Starlink.
A RUSI report lists intimidation, jamming and interference as possible objectives and notes limited defensive options.

History

Historical Context

On 11 January 2007 China used an SC-19 missile to destroy the FY-1C weather satellite, generating over 3,000 trackable debris pieces—the largest debris field ever. The United States had last tested an ASAT in 1985, and a 2013 Russian BLITS collision with that debris highlighted lingering risks. Those precedents frame today’s 2026 Russian close-approach alarm and renewed calls for orbital-separation norms.
