History

Historical Context

Canada’s experience with massive wildfires dates back to the May 1870 Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean blaze, which scorched 4,000 km², killed seven people and forced one-third of the region’s residents to flee. Later disasters such as the 2016 Fort McMurray fire reinforced calls for transparent investigations, shaping the response to today’s CFB Wainwright blaze in Alberta.
