Polish Researchers Uncover Altarpiece
- Polish researchers identified 450-year-old Renaissance altar fragments in Warsaw’s Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
- The stone decorations date to c. 1565–1580 and are attributed to sculptor Jan Michalowicz of Urzedów.
- They were moved to the church’s crypt in 1945 while ruins were cleared and later covered by rubble.
- Photographs from around 1895 and 1936 show the fragments originally adorned an altar, not a tombstone.
- Researchers are preparing preservation measures and evaluating a full reconstruction of the rare Renaissance altarpiece.
