Fatal Shooting on I-170 and Arrests

A 17-year-old senior at McCluer North High School, Alyssa Wilson, was shot and killed after a vehicle crash on the southbound lanes of Interstate 170 near Midland Boulevard in Overland, Missouri. Police responded to the scene shortly after 7 p.m. and found Wilson inside the crashed car; she later died at a hospital. Surveillance video captured a white SUV pulling over, the driver exiting briefly, a gunshot being fired, and the driver returning to the vehicle before it fled the scene.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

St. Louis County Prosecutor Melissa Price-Smith announced that Willie Herndon, 42, faces charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action, while his wife Taiya Herndon, 45, is charged with hindering prosecution for driving her husband to Illinois after the shooting. The Major Case Squad reported that Willie Herndon is being held on a $1 million cash-only bond and Taiya Herndon on a $500,000 cash-only bond.

Investigation Details

Investigators used license-plate readers to trace the SUV to a hotel in Caseyville, Illinois, where the couple, residents of Arlington, Texas, were arrested. A search warrant executed at the hotel recovered the firearm used in the shooting. According to police, Willie Herndon provided details about his involvement and indicated possible connections to other ongoing investigations.

Official Reactions

During a news conference, Wilson’s father, Robert Hickman, thanked law-enforcement officials for their work and expressed the family’s grief, noting that Wilson was 60 days from turning 18 and that the family had planned a vacation to a Disney theme park.
