Fatal Crash Details
Early Sunday morning, around 2:40 a.m., a vehicle driven by 20-year-old Mia Dawson left the southbound lane of the 5000 block of Nicholson Drive in Baton Rouge and struck two pedestrians walking on the right shoulder. Leah Fonte, a 21-year-old senior at Louisiana State University, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her fiancé, Shane Hirstius, also 21, was transported to a hospital in critical condition and died there later. Police arrested Dawson on charges of operating while impaired, reckless operation of a vehicle, hit-and-run driving, vehicular homicide and vehicular negligent injuring.
Victims’ Background
Leah Fonte was a senior majoring in biological sciences on a pre-dental track and served as financial chair of LSU Global Dental Brigades. Shane Hirstius, an LSU alumnus, volunteered as a firefighter with the River Ridge Volunteer Fire Department in Metairie. Both were high-school sweethearts who had become engaged in 2025 and were planning a March 2028 wedding.
Legal Action Against Driver
According to WAFB, Dawson’s blood-alcohol content did not exceed the legal limit, but she was charged with operating while intoxicated because she was not of legal drinking age. The Baton Rouge Police Department confirmed the arrest and listed the full set of charges.

LSU President Wade Rousse issued a statement expressing condolences to the Fonte family and invoking prayer for comfort. The River Ridge Volunteer Fire Department released a tribute to Hirstius, highlighting his dedication as a first responder.
