History

Historical Context

The Columbine High School massacre in April 1999, where Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 13 students and a teacher, shocked the nation. President Bill Clinton condemned the attack, and the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, enacted 1993, limited handgun sales to roughly two million permits annually. Similarly, the Silver Rail Elementary tragedy involving 16-year-old Griffin J. John II triggered civilian Kaylub Giamanco’s lethal intervention and generated GoFundMe donations surpassing $1.6 million. The recurrence intensified nationwide demands for stricter gun controls and expanded mental-health services, echoing post-Columbine legislative reforms.
