Apple Adds “Sound Glow” Ambient Light Feature to HomePod Speakers
By Drooid · · How we work
Core Release Details
Apple’s HomePod software update 27.2 introduces “Sound Glow,” an ambient lighting effect that illuminates the speaker’s touch surface with colors drawn from the album artwork of the currently playing audio. The effect animates two to three dominant colors that bounce across the surface, creating a subtle visual accompaniment to music, podcasts, or Apple’s ambient-music playlists. The feature is available only when the device is playing content that includes album artwork.
Device Compatibility
Enabling the Feature
Both outlets explain that users must first install the HomePod 27.2 update, which is currently in a release-candidate beta and slated for public release next week. After updating, the Sound Glow toggle appears in the Home app’s HomePod settings. The feature can also be turned on or off from the Apple TV Control Center when the HomePod is paired with an Apple TV, allowing quick activation for gatherings and easy deactivation afterward.
Additional Software Additions
MacRumors notes that the 27.2 update adds several other capabilities: HomePods can be set as the default speaker for a Mac, HomePod mini 2 and HomePod can serve as surround-sound speakers for Apple TV, and a “Lock Controls” option lets users disable touch interactions on the speaker’s top surface.
User Impact
The visual feedback is described as modest in brightness; when placed against a light-colored wall, the colored cast becomes visible in a dark room, offering an ambient “party vibe” without overwhelming the listening experience. By linking lighting to album artwork, Apple aims to enhance the sensory immersion of its smart-speaker ecosystem while keeping the effect optional for everyday use.
