History

Historical Context

On 13 March 1996, Thomas Hamilton killed 16 pupils and teacher Gwen Mayor at Dunblane Primary, prompting the Snowdrop petition and Prime Minister John Major’s Firearms (Amendment) Act 1997 that banned most handguns in Great Britain. The legislation’s legacy resurfaces after a Nottingham police officer was shot, drawing condemnation from MP Nadia Whittome and renewed calls for tighter gun controls.
