History

Historical Context

Since the NBA reinstated a soft salary cap in 1984-85, rookie contracts have been governed by a scale that lets teams exceed the cap to retain draft picks. The 2011 CBA introduced Designated Player extensions, and the 2023 CBA raised the cap to $154.647 million for 2025-26. Against this backdrop, the Charlotte Hornets signed Brandon Miller to a $209 million extension on Oct 19 2026, highlighting growing payroll pressures.
