History

Historical Context

In 1995, the Cleveland Indians rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win the American League Championship Series against the Seattle Mariners. The Indians’ bullpen, featuring reliever José Mesa, logged 12 shutout innings while the team posted a .560 winning percentage that postseason. The 2024 Guardians face a depleted bullpen after Cade Smith’s two-run outing, and manager Stephen Vogt refuses to start ace Gavin Williams on short rest. That comeback precedent reminds Cleveland that aggressive bullpen management can shift series momentum, prompting the club to rely on starter Freddy Peralta’s arm in Game 6.
