History

Historical Context

Operation Defensive Shield, Israel’s 2002 large-scale West Bank offensive announced by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, entered Ramallah, Bethlehem, Jenin and other cities, arresting more than 700 Palestinians and cutting suicide bombings by roughly half. The tactic of pre-emptive raids persists; today Shin Bet stopped two unarmed suspects near Latrun Junction, echoing the 2002 security drive.
