Ukraine Urges the United States to Heighten Pressure on Russia
Denys Sienik, Ukraine’s deputy ambassador to the United States, told PBS’s Geoff Bennett that Kyiv’s stance has remained unchanged since the conflict began: additional U.S. pressure on Moscow is essential to compel an end to the war. He argued that any perception of easing sanctions or lifting restrictions would embolden President Putin to expand attacks. Sienik emphasized that existing sanctions are already straining the Russian economy—inflation, reduced consumption, and depletion of the sovereign wealth fund—yet Russia continues to adapt, prompting Ukraine to advocate for “more and more new sanctions” to prevent further adjustment.
Concerns Over Early-Warning Systems and Starshield Access
Sienik highlighted two recent incidents in which Ukraine did not receive early warning of Russian missile strikes, despite notifying U.S. partners and seeking clarification. He noted that the speed limits of SpaceX’s Starshield communications system, which supports interceptor drones and long-range strikes, have been reduced from unlimited to a capped rate that triggers failures when drone speeds exceed 100 mph.
Humanitarian Situation in Occupied Oleshky
During the interview, Sienik drew attention to the town of Oleshky in the Kherson region, where roughly 2,000 residents remain trapped under Russian occupation. He reported that Russian forces have barred food, medicine, and Red Cross access, creating a dire humanitarian crisis that underscores Ukraine’s broader struggle for independence and territorial integrity.
Official Position of Ukraine’s Deputy Ambassador
Sienik conveyed gratitude for U.S. assistance provided through congressional aid while reiterating that Ukraine will continue to defend its territory, which it has done since 2014. He affirmed that any peace negotiations must include President Zelenskyy, rejecting the notion that discussions about Ukraine’s future could proceed without Ukrainian representation. The diplomat concluded by urging the United States to maintain and increase pressure on Russia as the primary path toward ending the conflict.
