History

Historical Context

The 2000 U.S. presidential election, decided by the Supreme Court on December 12, 2000, halted a Florida recount and gave the presidency to George W. Bush. The Florida Supreme Court ordered a manual recount of roughly 5,000 ballots, but the U.S. Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision stopped it, leaving a 537-vote margin. Lesley Stahl, Dana Barrett and Deidre Henderson’s claims that ballot boxes were seized and non-citizen votes fabricated echo the 2000 fraud accusations that fueled partisan distrust. Consequently, Congress passed the 2002 Help America Vote Act, allocating $380 million to modernize voting machines and creating the Election Assistance Commission to oversee future elections.
