Google Home Speaker Data-Download Bug
By Drooid · · How we work
Issue Overview
Recent reports indicate that the newest Google Home Speaker can continuously pull large amounts of data from Google’s servers even when the device is idle. Users have observed the speaker downloading data in the background despite no recent voice commands or media streaming.
Reported Data Usage
9to5Google documented a case in which a speaker that had not been used for a day consumed 17 GB of data within 24 hours, including a 9.99 GB download at 3 a.m. PT. The same device downloaded 41 GB on October 13 and accumulated 132 GB over the preceding 30 days. By contrast, another lightly used speaker in a different household recorded only 2 GB of usage in the same month. The Verge cited a Reddit user who saw the device consume more than 200 GB in a single day, suggesting the problem can be extreme for some owners.
Potential Cause
The Verge reported that the bug may stem from the speaker failing to correctly download and install a firmware update, causing it to repeatedly attempt the download.
Google’s Response
Google confirmed awareness of the issue and told 9to5Google that a software fix is already being rolled out to address the excessive background downloads.
Impact on Users
Because the downloads occur silently, they can quickly exceed limited broadband caps, especially for households with data-restricted plans. Google advises users to monitor device usage through the Google Home app’s Wi-Fi tab, where data consumption can be viewed over 1-, 7-, and 30-day periods. The problem appears isolated to the new Home Speaker model; other Google Home and Nest devices, including Nest Hubs, have not shown similar behavior.
