History

Historical Context

The 6 October 1985 Broadwater Farm riot in Tottenham, sparked by Cynthia Jarrett’s death, saw 230 police injured and PC Keith Blakelock killed, prompting the Met to adopt the gold-silver-bronze command system for major incidents. Decades of unrest, including the 2011 Tottenham riots that recalled Broadwater Farm, illustrate a persistent pattern of attacks on officers, echoed by the 18 October 2026 Angel Row shooting in Nottingham.
