History

Historical Context

In March 2014, the United States and the European Union imposed sanctions on Russia after its annexation of Crimea, aiming to pressure Vladimir Putin’s regime. The initial package targeted 120 Russian officials and entities, freezing roughly $1.5 billion in assets and banning key energy investments. Similarly, the October 20 2026 Oslo conference sees envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner urging President Volodymyr Zelensky for Patriot interceptors while President Donald Trump lifts diesel sanctions, echoing tactics. The 2014 sanctions showed economic pressure could curb Russian aggression, suggesting current policy shifts may reshape Kyiv’s defense procurement and NATO’s strategic calculations.
