Apple Expands Home Theater Audio with Four-Speaker Surround Sound Support

New tvOS 27.2 Feature Enables Four-Speaker Surround Sound
Apple released iOS 27.2, tvOS 27.2, and HomePod Software 27.2 updates earlier this month. The tvOS update adds native support for four-speaker surround sound when the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K is paired with compatible HomePod devices. Apple states that the feature is configured directly on the Apple TV, with an optional setup path through the Apple TV Remote app on iPhone.
Compatible HomePod Configurations
The surround-sound mode works with the following speaker combinations: four HomePod mini 2 units, four second-generation HomePods, or a mixed pair of two HomePods and two HomePod mini 2 speakers, provided each pair matches. Apple notes that the original HomePod and original HomePod mini are not supported, and earlier Apple TV models cannot use the feature. When a HomePod group is created, the speakers are treated as a single accessory, allowing the system to detect each speaker’s position for automatic timing and level calibration.
Upcoming Device Launches
Apple has scheduled the HomePod mini 2 to launch on October 30, 2026, and the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K to become available on November 13, 2026. Both products can be pre-ordered through Apple’s online store. The new devices are required to take full advantage of the four-speaker surround-sound capability introduced in the software updates.
User Experience and Setup Flow
During setup, users select the “Home theater” option on the Apple TV, after which the system groups the chosen HomePod speakers. The grouping process automatically aligns speaker placement, delivering synchronized audio that matches the visual content. Apple’s documentation emphasizes that the feature simplifies high-fidelity home-theater configuration without needing separate audio receivers or complex wiring.
