History

Historical Context

On April 20 1999, seniors Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 13 students and a teacher at Columbine High School, injuring 20 others. The massacre prompted nationwide adoption of metal detectors, zero-tolerance policies, and the IARD response tactic, while sparking a federal push for tighter background checks that later failed to close the gun-show loophole. By June 2025, more than 70 copycat shootings traced back to Columbine.
