History

Historical Context

In 1995 South Africa hosted its first Rugby World Cup after re-entry to international sport post-apartheid, and the Springboks beat New Zealand 15-12 in extra time before a crowd of 62,000, with Nelson Mandela presenting the Webb Ellis Cup to captain François Pienaar. Decades later, Canada’s 24-21 win over England echoes the tournament’s tradition of underdog upsets first seen in the inaugural 1987 final.
