OpenAI Accelerates $30 B Funding Round to Secure $1.4 Trillion Valuation Ahead of Anthropic IPO

By Drooid · · How we work

Core Development: Rapid Fundraising to Boost Valuation

Reuters reports that OpenAI is pursuing an “unusually fast” $30 billion financing round, aiming to lift its valuation to at least $1.4 trillion. Existing backers such as SoftBank and the Abu Dhabi-based sovereign fund MGX are in talks to participate, and the speed of the round is described as faster than typical for a deal of this size.

Competitive Landscape and Valuation Targets

Anthropic, OpenAI’s chief rival, has been positioned by Reuters as the market-value leader since May, with analysts previously forecasting a $2 trillion IPO in November. More recent speculation cited by Reuters suggests Anthropic’s post-IPO market cap could be about $1.5 trillion, roughly a quarter lower than earlier expectations. The two firms are therefore competing for trillion-dollar valuations while courting many of the same investors.

Financial Scale and Revenue Context

OpenAI has told investors that its annualized revenue was approaching $50 billion at the end of September, roughly $20 billion below the $70 billion projected by some analysts. By contrast, Anthropic disclosed that its quarterly revenue this year rose from $4.8 billion in Q1 to $11.6 billion in Q2 and $16.8 billion in Q3, each quarter surpassing the company’s total revenue for the entire previous year and delivering profit.

Official Comments on Timing and Strategy

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously indicated that the company does not plan an IPO in 2026 and later added that a public offering will not occur until its AI models “stop going rogue.” The current fundraising effort, according to Reuters, is intended to fund massive infrastructure commitments and to strengthen the balance sheet in case a downturn in IPO markets delays the planned listing for next year.

Market Implications

Analysts note that the accelerated capital raise reflects heightened investor caution amid rising interest rates, volatile tech stocks, and growing scrutiny of AI firm valuations. By securing a large funding tranche now, OpenAI hopes to lock in capital that might otherwise shift to Anthropic’s upcoming listing, potentially shaping the competitive dynamics of the AI sector’s race toward trillion-dollar market caps.
