History

Historical Context

The Great Fire of London erupted in September 1666, razing much of the medieval city and prompting sweeping reforms. King Charles II ordered Sir Christopher Wren to design new fire-proof building codes, which later saved an estimated 13,200 houses from similar disasters. Today, Merseyside Fire Service, London Fire Brigade, and Greater Manchester Police confront fatal house fires in Wallasey, Willesden, and Prestwich, echoing past vulnerabilities. The 1666 reforms underpin modern joint investigations, urging stricter safety inspections to prevent repeat tragedies across UK municipalities.
