History

Historical Context

The 16 December 2012 gang-rape of Jyoti Singh—known as the Nirbhaya case—triggered mass protests that forced the Indian government to pass the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act 2013, introducing a mandatory 20-year minimum for gang-rape and six new fast-track courts. That precedent of swift legal response underlies Uttar Pradesh’s Rs 50,000 reward for clues in the Shraddha Dubey murder and Akhilesh Yadav’s political warning.
