History

Historical Context

In 1914 a disturbed employee set fire to Wright’s Taliesin estate in Spring Green, killing seven and leading Illinois to require fire-resistant roofs. Decades of neglect left Taliesin and Taliesin West deteriorating; the Foundation received $300,000 federal aid in the 1970s but needed millions for repairs. The recent 32 mph roof failure at Taliesin West has renewed National Park Service and foundation calls for stricter preservation codes.
