History

Historical Context

David Beckham’s 11-January-2007 signing with LA Galaxy created MLS’s Designated Player rule and generated 11,000 new season tickets, dramatically raising the league’s profile. That commercial breakthrough set a template for later star imports, such as Lionel Messi’s 2024 Inter Miami surge, which again fuels growing global interest in American soccer.
