History

Historical Context

On 28 April 1996, Martin Bryant killed 35 people at Port Arthur, prompting Prime Minister John Howard to enact the National Firearms Agreement, a buy-back that removed 643,000 guns. The October 2026 ramming of Independent MP Helen Haines by Brendan Nugent, labeled politically motivated by ASIO, revives those security concerns and may trigger new parliamentary safety reforms.
