iPhone Duo Launch Preview: Built-in Apps and Dual-Screen UI

By Drooid · · How we work

Upcoming Release

Apple has scheduled the iPhone Duo launch for October 23, a Friday. Promotional materials released three days before the launch show screenshots of the device’s built-in apps, offering the first detailed look at everyday usage on the dual-screen handset.

Built-in App Screenshots and Usability

The App Store previews reveal how core apps adapt to the Duo’s form factor. Apple indicates the layout is especially suited for keyboard-heavy tasks and web browsing in Safari. In apps such as Preview, tool palettes appear at the bottom while sidebars and navigation bars remain accessible, providing a combined bottom-tool and side-panel experience. Markup-editing previews suggest drawing and photo-editing apps will benefit from the expanded display area paired with a bottom tool palette.

Dual-Screen Layout and Dynamic Island Details

On the Home Screen, the left inner display hosts the Today view with widgets, while app icons occupy the right side. The status bar resides in the upper-right corner, and lock-screen shortcuts like Flashlight and Camera appear in the bottom-right. Because the Duo lacks Face ID, the inner screen does not feature a constantly visible Dynamic Island; instead, Apple retains the Dynamic Island that expands from the side for Live Activities and alerts. The outer display includes a smaller vertical Dynamic Island that houses the camera cutout.

Device Configurations and Usage Modes

Beyond the simple open-and-closed states, the Duo can be positioned like a laptop at an angle for video playback, or set in a “tent” shape with the outer screen visible. It can also be held partially open like a book. Although current screenshots do not display side-by-side app usage or multiple windows of the same app (e.g., Safari), Apple’s roadmap suggests these multitasking options will be supported after launch.

Anticipated Post-Launch Updates

Apple expects a rapid influx of third-party app updates to fully exploit the Duo’s dual-screen capabilities. Media reviews and first-impression impressions are slated to appear within days of the October 23 launch, providing further insight into real-world performance and developer adoption.
