Netflix Options Market Signals Anticipated Earnings Volatility

By Drooid · · How we work

Options Positioning Ahead of Q3 Results

Traders are heavily weighting the options market for Netflix Inc. (NFLX) as the company approaches its third-quarter earnings release. The near-the-money $70 straddle is priced to move the stock roughly 10% in either direction by the end of the week, indicating expectations of heightened volatility. The most active contract is the $60 put, with over 13,500 contracts traded and open interest exceeding 10,000. Additional downside protection is evident in sizable volumes for $35, $62 and $65 puts. On the bullish side, the $70 call has attracted about 4,700 contracts, while the $85 call shows similar activity, reflecting a split view on direction but consensus on potential swing size.

Call-Heavy Activity Suggests Optimism

Data from the trading day preceding the earnings report show a pronounced tilt toward calls: roughly one-and-a-half times more call contracts were bought than puts, while put-selling volume exceeded put-buying by more than 150% of average daily levels. Six of the ten most-bought contracts are calls, five of which expire the Friday after the earnings announcement. The single largest trade involved the sale of a string of November-20, $70-strike puts worth about $2 million, a move interpreted as a strong vote of confidence in the stock’s near-term prospects.

Analyst Earnings Forecast

Consensus estimates from market analysts project earnings of $0.82 per share for the quarter. This figure underpins the options pricing, as traders price in a possible deviation from the forecast in either direction.

Potential Impact on the Stock

Netflix’s share price has lingered near $70, down roughly 1% in the latest session. If results exceed the $0.82 consensus, the bullish options positioning could translate into a rapid price appreciation, potentially matching the 9% post-earnings move observed after the Q3 2022 report. Conversely, a miss could trigger the downside protection built into the high put volumes, limiting losses for those who hedged.

Upcoming Earnings Release

The earnings announcement is scheduled for the close of trading on Tuesday, with the options market’s implied swing set to resolve by the following Friday. Market participants will watch the results closely to see whether the anticipated volatility materializes and which side of the options spectrum gains.
