U.S. Deploys Carrier Strike Group and Marine Expeditionary Unit to the Middle East

By Drooid · · How we work

Deployment of Carrier Strike Group and Marine Unit

The Pentagon is moving the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) toward U.S. Central Command’s area of operations. The carrier left California on September 27 and, after a brief stop in Yokosuka, Japan on October 16, continued westward. The accompanying USS Makin Island amphibious ready group departed San Diego on September 28, heading through the Pacific with a stop in Hawaii. Two U.S. officials told Fox News that the formations are expected to arrive in the Middle East by the end of November.

Recent Naval Presence in the Region

Before this deployment, two U.S. aircraft carriers were already operating in the Arabian Sea: USS George H.W. Bush, which arrived in April, and USS George Washington, which arrived in August to replace USS Abraham Lincoln. The USS Boxer amphibious ready group, carrying the 11th MEU, is also deployed in the Arabian Sea alongside USS Portland and USS Comstock.

Scale and Capabilities

The combined force of the Theodore Roosevelt strike group and the Makin Island group carries roughly 10,000 personnel. The 13th MEU adds amphibious assault capability, aviation support, and rapid-deployment forces. At peak, the U.S. could have three aircraft carriers in the region, though the Roosevelt may ultimately replace the George Washington as part of a planned rotation.

Official Context and Statements

U.S. officials confirmed the timetable to Fox News, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in southern Israel to discuss regional security threats, including Iran. President Donald Trump is reported to be weighing renewed military action against Iran after the November 3 midterm elections, though no decision to resume large-scale attacks has been announced.

Strategic Implications

Analysts note that the additional carrier and Marine forces broaden Washington’s options should tensions with Iran intensify, particularly over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and the broader conflict that began with U.S.–Israeli strikes in February. The deployments are part of routine troop rotations, but they also signal preparation for a possible escalation in the Middle East.
