Google Expands Gemini AI with Personal Intelligence to Android Auto Vehicles

By Drooid · · How we work

Core Rollout Details

Google began rolling out the “Personal Intelligence” extension for its Gemini AI assistant to Android Auto users today, with plans to bring the feature to cars that have Google Built-in in the coming months. The update is available globally except for Switzerland, the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Nigeria. Users must enable the Personal Intelligence setting for Gemini to access data from linked Google apps; the feature can be disabled at any time.

How Personal Intelligence Enhances In-Car Interactions

When enabled, Gemini can draw on Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube, Search and other services to answer context-specific queries. For example, a driver heading to the airport can ask, “What’s my flight gate?” and “Is my flight on time?” and receive both answers without stopping. In a new city, Gemini can suggest dinner spots along the route while factoring in preferences like vegetarian restrictions.

Official Statements & Responses

Google emphasizes that the feature is optional and that users retain full control over their data. The company states that Personal Intelligence only activates when the driver’s phone is connected to the car and the setting is turned on.

> “If you don’t use Personal Intelligence, everything in the car still works: You can use navigation, listen to music, make calls, and ask questions, but the answers won’t be tailored to you,” — Google

Google adds that disabling Personal Intelligence leaves all standard car functions—navigation, music, calls and generic queries—fully operational.

Background on Gemini in Vehicles

Google first introduced Gemini to Android Auto in November of the previous year. An earlier “Personal Intelligence” beta launched in the United States in March and later expanded to free accounts worldwide, after initially being limited to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

User Controls and Privacy

Drivers can opt in to Personal Intelligence, select which apps Gemini may access, and turn the feature off at any moment. Google asserts that no data is shared with the car’s infotainment system unless the user has explicitly enabled the setting, aiming to balance convenience with privacy.
