History

Historical Context

In 2005, Liverpool staged a dramatic comeback against AC Milan in Istanbul, overturning a 3-0 halftime deficit to win on penalties. Manager Rafa Benítez reorganized the side, while captain Steven Gerrard scored the first goal, and the team netted three goals within six minutes, a 3-goal surge. The October 2026 Anfield triumph mirrors that legacy, as Liverpool erased a 2-0 halftime hole against Villarreal, with Alexis Mac Allister’s brace and Rio Ngumoha’s assists echoing Gerrard’s heroics. These comeback patterns reinforce Liverpool’s reputation for resilient European performances, suggesting future deep runs in the Champions League and heightened expectations for the squad.
