History

Historical Context

In 1997 the Florida Marlins, in their fifth season with a $48.7 million payroll, became the first wild-card team to win the World Series, defeating the Cleveland Indians in seven games. A subsequent fire-sale left them 54-108 in 1998, creating the classic underdog-to-ruin story. The 2026 Brewers-Rays showdown revives that small-market challenge.
