Historical Context

In March 1978 the UN Security Council created UNIFIL, deploying 4,000 peacekeepers after Israel’s 1978 invasion of southern Lebanon. The mission’s mandate was renewed annually and most recently extended to 31 December 2026, with a planned withdrawal in 2027. Lebanese officials and French minister Jean-Noël Barrot now warn that a rapid drawdown could repeat the 1978 security vacuum.
