Truck Drivers’ Strike Disrupts Food Supplies in Southern Italy
By Drooid · · How we work
Truckers’ Blockade Halts Distribution in Naples
On Tuesday, truck drivers in Naples blocked the loading and unloading of fresh food and other goods at supermarket distribution warehouses. The week-long protest, part of a broader European movement, prevented deliveries to supermarkets and gas stations, leaving shelves and pumps partially empty. A local supermarket posted a notice apologizing for the temporary unavailability of products.
Diesel Price Surge Tied to the Iran War
The strike stems from diesel prices that are roughly a third higher than before the Iran war, according to the report. A temporary diesel-tax discount that had helped curb pump prices expired earlier this month, leaving drivers to shoulder sharply increased operating costs.
Consumer Shortages Across the South
The disruption has led to shortages of fresh pasta, packaged cheeses, meats, and produce in Naples and has spread to nearby regions of Calabria, Puglia, and Sicily, where shoppers’ stockpiling has compounded the problem. Gas station pumps in the affected areas have also run low, further hampering transportation.
Government Measures and Promised Support
Transport Minister Matteo Salvini met with national trucking associations on Tuesday, pledging tax credits to offset soaring diesel prices and funds to modernize trucking fees. Paolo Uggè, president of the Unatras trucking-association group, said Salvini promised that payments would begin on Wednesday and pledged legislation aimed at reducing operating costs for drivers. These steps are intended to alleviate the immediate financial pressure on truckers and restore the flow of goods to southern Italian markets.
