History

Historical Context

In 1990, the Colorado Buffaloes captured the national championship after a dramatic overtime victory over Georgia Tech. Coach Bill McCartney, then in his eighth season, guided the team to a 12-0 regular-season record and a $1.5 million television contract with ESPN. Similarly, Deion Sanders' Colorado program now faces early-season setbacks, including a 27-24 loss to Utah and a costly illegal forward-pass penalty that erased a potential field-goal. The 1990 precedent shows that early adversity can catalyze program turnarounds, prompting fans and administrators to anticipate a resurgence if Sanders adjusts strategy.
