Teen’s Suicide After Viewing TikTok Content Fuels Calls for Stronger UK Regulation

By Drooid · · How we work

The Teen’s Death and Coroner’s Findings

Adriana Retyte, a 14-year-old pupil at Langley School in Norfolk, died after attempting suicide in early May 2026. Her devices showed multiple views of such material in the week before the incident.

Calls for an Ofcom Probe and TikTok’s Position

The platform has not yet disclosed any investigation of Retyte’s account.

Survey Data Highlighting Exposure to Harmful Content

The Molly Rose Foundation (MRF), a charity established in memory of another 14-year-old who died after seeing self-harm content, released a summer 2026 survey of 1,825 children from 21 UK schools. The study found that one in three respondents had been exposed to high-risk suicide, self-harm, depression or eating-disorder content on major platforms in the week before the survey, and 7 % reported seeing material that made suicidal thoughts appear “normal, appealing, or cool.” The MRF argues that these figures demonstrate a clear need for regulatory action.

Verbatim Quote

“The three-quarters of teens who are still seeing high-risk suicide, self-harm and depression content saw it on TikTok. The case for action is clear, it just needs the will to take on big tech. Ofcom must now open an investigation into TikTok’s algorithm that is driving harmful content without delay. Anything less is a dereliction of the duty of a regulator.” — Andy Burrows, the chief executive of the MRF
