Incident Overview

On October 21, 2026, police responded to reports of a disturbance at state MP Hannah Beazley’s electorate office on Albany Highway in Victoria Park, Perth, at about 1:15 pm. Officers located a 56-year-old man nearby in Bentley, arrested him, and noted that he was armed with nunchucks—a martial-arts weapon consisting of two short sticks linked by a chain. The man is cooperating with investigators and has not yet been charged. No injuries were reported among staff or bystanders.

Recent Political Violence Context

The episode occurred just days after federal MP Helen Haines (member for Indi) was seriously injured when a man ran her over outside her office in Wangaratta. The proximity of the two incidents has heightened concerns among Western Australian politicians about the safety of electorate offices and public officials.

Official Reactions

Hannah Beazley, Western Australia’s Minister for Local Government, described the event as a “confronting situation” and said her staff were “shaken and upset.” She emphasized that her priority was the welfare of her employees and noted that she did not know the perpetrator’s motivation while the matter remained under police investigation.

Premier Roger Cook said the incident provides an opportunity to review recent security upgrades and consider additional actions for electorate offices, parliamentary precincts, and officials’ homes. He referenced ongoing upgrades to the parliamentary precinct that began in the 1990s.

One Nation WA leader Rod Caddies recounted a separate threat he received while driving near Parliament House, describing profanities and a death threat from an unidentified man. Caddies reported the incident to the dignitary protection unit, which is investigating.

Safety Measures Discussion

State party leaders are scheduled to meet with government officials, police, and parliamentary representatives the day after the incident to discuss security arrangements for electorate offices. Premier Cook indicated that the meeting will address both existing upgrades and potential new measures to improve protection for staff and elected officials.
