Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8 Review: Incremental Tweaks and Persistent Trade-offs

By Drooid · · How we work

Overview of the Galaxy Z Flip 8

The latest Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8 retains the clamshell form factor while shaving weight to 180 g and reducing thickness to 6.1 mm when unfolded and 13.1 mm when folded. These dimensions make it 0.4 mm thinner unfolded, 0.6 mm thinner folded, and 8 g lighter than the preceding Z Flip 7, though the differences are subtle in everyday handling.

Design Changes from the Z Flip 7

Samsung reengineered the hinge, creating a deeper gap between the two halves and employing less aggressive magnets with added spring tension. The result is a noticeably smoother one-handed opening compared with earlier Z Flip models. The external color palette expands to include Graphite, Cream, Pink, and an online-exclusive Mint.

Build Quality and Materials

The device features Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the front, a glass-reinforced polymer rear panel, and a frame described by Samsung as “Advanced Armor Aluminum.” The main-screen crease remains visible and tactile, as Samsung did not adopt the titanium display structure used in the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Overall, the construction feels premium and solid in hand.

Official Claims and Limitations

Samsung rates the Z Flip 8 with an IP48 rating, indicating protection against submersion in shallow water and resistance to larger particles, but not full dustproofing. Fine dust, sand, and dirt can still infiltrate the device. The company also highlights the new hinge mechanics as a key usability improvement.
