History

Historical Context

On 6 December 1917 a fire aboard the French munitions ship Mont-Blanc detonated, killing 1,782 people and wounding roughly 9,000 in Halifax. Lieutenant Governor MacCallum Grant formed the Halifax Relief Commission, while police, firefighters, the Royal Canadian Engineers and Boston rescue trains flooded the city with aid. The disaster spurred Canada’s first coordinated emergency-response framework, shaping today’s inter-provincial disaster planning.
