Million Dollar Spending

U.S. President Donald Trump visited Clemson’s T. Ed Garrison Arena in South Carolina on Wednesday, Oct 21, 2026, to campaign for Senate candidate Darline Graham.

History

Historical Context

The 2010 Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission decision, issued by the U.S. Supreme Court, unleashed unprecedented independent political spending. The 5-4 ruling, authored by Justice Kennedy, permitted corporations and unions to spend unlimited sums, and by 2026 campaign finance data shows $10 million in outside money flooding South Carolina’s Senate race. Donald Trump’s October 21, 2026 rally at Clemson’s T. Ed Garrison Arena for Darline Graham mirrors the post-Citizens United era, where candidates like Graham rely on massive external funding and high-profile endorsements. This pattern suggests that future elections will increasingly hinge on billionaire-driven spending, reshaping Senate contests and amplifying partisan polarization nationwide.
