Fugitive Anna Marlene Somoza Captured in Mexico After 30-Year Murder Investigation

Arrest in Mexico

U.S. Marshals and Mexican authorities detained 60-year-old Anna Marlene Somoza in Xochitepec, Morelos, in October 2026. The operation followed a September 2026 tip that placed Somoza near Cernavaca. Mexican federal police and Interpol officers executed the arrest, and extradition proceedings have been opened so she can face the pending first-degree murder charge in Arizona.

History of the Crystal Reyes Case

The case began when a hunter discovered human bone fragments near Mobile, Arizona, in 1998. DNA testing in 2014, using a sample from the child’s biological father Darren Stockwell, identified the remains as those of Crystal Reyes, who had died on January 30, 1997 after suffocating inside a sealed cardboard box, according to the U.S. Marshals Service. Investigators said Crystal endured severe abuse while living with Somoza and her boyfriend, narcotics detective Avelino Tamala, including confinement in a small dog kennel. Somoza and Tamala were indicted on December 12, 2014. Tamala was arrested the same day and later sentenced to life in prison in 2016. Somoza served an eight-year federal sentence for unrelated drug offenses, was released in 2008, and subsequently vanished from U.S. jurisdiction.

Official Statements

Timothy Courchaine, U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona, said:

> “No one can hide from American justice forever.” — Timothy Courchaine

The U.S. Attorney Juan Rocha noted that Mexico often seeks assurances that the death penalty will not be pursued, though prosecutors have not confirmed whether it will be sought.

Legal Status and Next Steps

Somoza remains charged with first-degree murder; she has not been convicted. A provisional arrest warrant issued in 2022 supports her extradition to Arizona, where she will face trial. The case, now moving from a decades-old cold file to active prosecution, illustrates the long-term reach of U.S. federal law enforcement across international borders.
